The slices are placed on a white marbled surface with a parchment paper underneath some of them. Two of the slices are stacked on white round crackers. A green olive is in front of the slices and a serrated knife with a wooden handle lies diagonally near the front. Ingredients

  • 250 g / 8 oz cream cheese (Philadelphia, 1 block)
  • 180 g / 6 oz sliced large salami
  • 1/4 cup baby capers, drained
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley or basil (or other herb of choice, or omit)
  • Crackers, to serve (Jatz recommended)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Place the cold cream cheese on a large piece of cling wrap.
  2. Step 2: Cover with another piece of cling wrap.
  3. Step 3: Use a rolling pin to roll the cream cheese into a rectangle about 32cm (13″) by 23cm (9″).
  4. Step 4: Peel off the top cling wrap and cover the exposed cream cheese with salami slices, slightly overlapping each slice.
  5. Step 5: Cover the salami with a new piece of cling wrap. Press down gently, then carefully turn the whole thing over so the cream cheese side is facing up.
  6. Step 6: Peel off the cling wrap to expose the cream cheese layer. Sprinkle evenly with drained capers and chopped herbs.
  7. Step 7: Starting from the long edge, roll up the layers tightly, removing cling wrap as you go. Roll firmly to avoid trapping air bubbles.
  8. Step 8: Wrap the rolled log tightly in the same cling wrap, twist the ends to secure, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours to set.
  9. Step 9: Remove the cling wrap, slice into rounds, and serve with crackers.

Tips & Variations

  • Use fresh herbs like chives or dill for additional flavor variations.
  • If you prefer a bit of heat, add a thin layer of spicy mustard before layering salami.
  • Ensure the cream cheese is cold and firm for easier rolling and neater slices.

Storage

Store the roll wrapped tightly in cling wrap in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For best texture, serve chilled. Leftover slices can be refrigerated in an airtight container and are best consumed within 24 hours. Reheating is not necessary or recommended.

FAQs

Can I use a different type of meat instead of salami?

Yes, thinly sliced cured meats like prosciutto or pepperoni work well as substitutes, offering different flavors but similar texture.

How do I make sure the roll doesn’t crack or break?

Keep the cream cheese cold and use cling wrap to help shape and smooth the roll. Rolling firmly without rushing helps prevent cracks and air pockets.

Scale

Primary Ingredients

  • 250 g / 8 oz cream cheese (Philadelphia block)
  • 180 g / 6 oz sliced large salami
  • 1/4 cup baby capers, drained
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley or basil (or other herbs of choice, or omit)
  • Crackers, to serve (e.g., Jatz)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cream Cheese Base: Place the cold cream cheese on a large piece of cling wrap. Cover it with another piece of cling wrap to prevent sticking and prepare for rolling.
  2. Roll Cream Cheese: Using a rolling pin, roll the cream cheese into a rectangle approximately 32 cm (13 inches) by 23 cm (9 inches). This creates an even base layer for the salami.
  3. Layer Salami: Peel off the cling wrap from the top. Arrange the sliced salami on top of the cream cheese, slightly overlapping each piece to cover the surface fully.
  4. Flip and Add Herbs and Capers: Cover the salami with a new piece of cling wrap, press down gently, then carefully flip it over so the cream cheese side is now facing up. Remove the cling wrap to expose the cream cheese surface and evenly sprinkle with baby capers and chopped parsley or your chosen herbs.
  5. Roll the Log: Starting from the long edge, roll the cream cheese and salami mixture tightly, removing cling wrap as you go, to form a firm roll without air bubbles.
  6. Chill: Wrap the roll firmly in cling wrap, twisting the ends, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours to set and develop flavors.
  7. Serve: Unwrap the chilled roll and slice into rounds about 1 cm thick. Serve these savory slices with your favorite crackers as a tasty appetizer.

Notes
