Homemade Flatbread Dough Recipe

  • Author: Ethan
  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes (including rising time)
  • Yield: 1 large dough ball, sufficient for 4-6 flatbreads (depending on size) 1x

Description

This recipe for flatbread dough is a simple and versatile base made with dried yeast, flour, and olive oil. The dough is kneaded until smooth and left to rise, then refrigerated until ready to use. Perfect for making delicious homemade flatbreads such as roasted lemony broccoli & mascarpone flatbreads.

Ingredients

Scale

Flatbread Dough Ingredients

  • 2 tsp dried yeast
  • 1 tbsp caster sugar
  • 300ml warm water
  • 500g plain flour
  • 10g salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: Combine the dried yeast and caster sugar with warm water. Stir well to dissolve the yeast and sugar, then leave the mixture for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy. This ensures your yeast is active and ready to leaven the dough.
  2. Mix Ingredients: Tip the plain flour, salt, and olive oil into the yeast mixture. Mix together using a wooden spoon or a dough hook attached to a stand mixer until the ingredients just begin to come together.
  3. Knead the Dough: Knead the dough for about 10 minutes by hand until it becomes smooth and shiny. If using a stand mixer, knead with the dough hook on medium speed for the same amount of time to develop gluten and elasticity in the dough.
  4. First Rise: Cover the dough and leave it to rise in a warm spot for 1 to 2 hours, or until it has doubled in size. This resting period allows the yeast to ferment and the dough to become airy.
  5. Deflate and Shape: After rising, gently punch the dough to deflate it, then bring it back into a smooth ball shape.
  6. Chill the Dough: Transfer the dough ball to a lightly oiled container. Cover and set it aside in the fridge. The dough can be kept chilled for up to three days until you’re ready to use it for flatbread recipes.

Notes

  • Ensure the water is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
  • You can prepare the dough ahead of time and refrigerate it for up to 3 days to develop flavor.
  • Kneading properly is key for a smooth, elastic dough that will rise well.
  • This dough works well for various flatbread toppings, including roasted vegetables and cheeses.
  • Bring the dough to room temperature before stretching and baking for best results.
