Description

These Freshly Baked Flaky Apple Dumplings are a delightful dessert featuring tender Granny Smith apple wedges wrapped in buttery crescent roll dough and baked in a sweet brown sugar sauce. The dumplings come out golden, puffy, and bursting with warm apple flavor, perfect for a cozy treat or special occasion dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Apple Dumplings

  • 2 cans refrigerated Crescent rolls (8 each, total 16 rolls)
  • 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cut into 8 wedges each

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350° F (175° C) and lightly spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with baking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Make Sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine 1 cup water, 1 cup brown sugar, ½ cup unsalted butter, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Stir continuously until the butter and sugar dissolve and the mixture is smooth, about 2 minutes.
  3. Boil & Cool: Bring the sauce mixture to a boil and let it boil for 1 minute. Then remove from heat and let it cool slightly while you prepare the dumplings.
  4. Prepare Dough: Unwrap each crescent roll on a lightly floured surface or parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  5. Assemble Dumplings: Place one apple wedge at the widest part of each crescent roll. Wrap the dough around the apple wedge tightly and place each wrapped dumpling into the prepared baking pan. Repeat the process until all 16 dumplings are assembled.
  6. Add Sauce: Pour the prepared brown sugar sauce evenly over the wrapped dumplings in the baking pan.
  7. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the crescent roll dough is golden brown, flaky, and puffed up.
  8. Cool and Serve: Let the apple dumplings cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm on their own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • If fresh Granny Smith apples are unavailable, you may substitute with other tart apples like Honeycrisp or Braeburn for similar results.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg to the apple wedges before wrapping.
  • Ensure the crescent rolls are tightly wrapped to prevent sauce leakage during baking.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an indulgent dessert.
