A round white plate on a white marbled surface is filled with five small peeled orange tangerines arranged in the center top, followed by a layer of black grapes and peeled lychees with black and white candy eyes, creating a spooky look. Below these, there are several apple slices in red with white almond slices inside arranged to look like mouths with teeth. To the right on the plate, a mix of green and black grapes with candy eyes are scattered, creating a playful effect. At the bottom, four mummy-shaped bars wrapped with light cream-colored strips and decorated with candy eyes complete the display. photo taken with an iphone --ar 4:5 --v 7

Ingredients

  • 70g white chocolate, plus extra for sticking on the eyeballs
  • 3 small bananas, peeled and cut in half crosswise
  • Eyeball cake decorations or black writing icing or edible ink pen
  • Small piece of celery
  • 6 small tangerines, peeled
  • 1 red apple, cored and cut into 6 wedges
  • 2 tbsp nut butter (we used almond)
  • 25g yogurt-coated raisins
  • 425g can lychees in juice, drained
  • 150g blueberries
  • 250g black and green grapes
  • Short wooden skewers

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Melt the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water or in the microwave in 20-second bursts. Let it cool to room temperature.
  2. Step 2: Place the banana halves on a tray lined with baking parchment. Drizzle the cooled white chocolate in a criss-cross pattern to create ‘bandages’. Attach eyeball decorations using extra melted chocolate or draw eyes with black icing or an edible ink pen. Chill for about 30 minutes until set.
  3. Step 3: Cut tiny ‘stalks’ from the celery piece and insert them into the tops of the peeled tangerines where the segments meet, creating pumpkin stalks.
  4. Step 4: For apple ‘fangs’, cut a small wedge from the peel side of each apple wedge to form lips. Spread nut butter inside the ‘mouth’ and press in yogurt-coated raisins as wonky teeth.
  5. Step 5: Stuff each drained lychee with a blueberry. Attach eyeball decorations to the blueberries with melted white chocolate, or skewer the fruit together. Optionally, serve these lychee eyeballs in a punch bowl.
  6. Step 6: Thread black and green grapes alternately onto wooden skewers to form ‘snakes’. Attach eyeball decorations with melted white chocolate as before.
  7. Step 7: Arrange all the prepared fruit on a large serving platter. Fill any gaps with leftover blueberries and add spooky Halloween decorations if desired.

Tips & Variations

  • Use almond or peanut butter based on your preference or dietary needs.
  • Swap yogurt-coated raisins for chocolate chips or small marshmallows if you want a sweeter treat.
  • Work quickly with the banana decorations to prevent discoloration; serve soon after chilling for best presentation.
  • Try different colored grapes or berries to match your Halloween color theme.

Storage

Store the prepared fruit platter covered in the refrigerator and consume within 24 hours for optimal freshness. The bananas are best eaten within two hours of preparation to avoid browning. Leftover white chocolate can be refrigerated and gently reheated for reuse.

How to Serve

A round white plate is filled with colorful Halloween-themed fruit snacks arranged in groups. On the top left side, there are six peeled small orange tangerines placed closely together, each showing their bright orange segments with small green stems on top. To the right, green and dark purple grapes are stacked in a cluster, each grape decorated with a small edible eye. Below the tangerines, peeled lychee fruits with a white texture are decorated with black and white eyes on top, surrounded by scattered blueberries which are deep blue and round. Below the lychees, five red apple slices are paired to look like open mouths with almond slivers placed inside to mimic teeth. On the bottom right, three wrapped banana-shaped snacks have a light beige color with drizzled white icing and two small eyes on each, looking like mummies. FAQs

Can I prepare this fruit platter in advance?

You can prepare some elements, like stuffing lychees or threading grape snakes, a few hours ahead. However, decorate the bananas shortly before serving to keep them looking fresh.

What can I use if I don’t have eyeball decorations?

If eyeball cake decorations aren’t available, use a black edible ink pen or black writing icing to create simple eyes directly on the fruit. Small blueberries or chocolate chips can also substitute as eyes.

Grape Snakes

  • 250g black and green grapes
  • Short wooden skewers
  • Black writing icing or edible ink pen, or eyeball cake decorations

Instructions

  1. Prepare Mummy Bananas: Melt the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water or in the microwave using 20-second bursts. Allow it to cool to room temperature. Place the banana halves on a tray lined with baking parchment. Drizzle the melted chocolate in a criss-cross pattern over the bananas to resemble ‘bandages’. Attach eyeball cake decorations or use black writing icing or an edible ink pen to draw eyes on the bananas. Chill the bananas for about 30 minutes until the chocolate sets. Note that bananas may start to discolor after approximately 2 hours.
  2. Create Tangerine Pumpkins: Peel the tangerines carefully. Cut tiny stalk shapes from a small piece of celery. Insert these celery stalks into the tops of the tangerines where the segments meet, simulating pumpkin stems.
  3. Make Apple Fangs: Core the red apple and cut it into six wedges. Cut a small wedge from the peel side of each apple wedge to form lips. Spread about 2 tablespoons of nut butter inside the ‘mouth’ space. Press yogurt-coated raisins into the nut butter to resemble wonky teeth.
  4. Assemble Lychee Eyeballs: Drain the canned lychees thoroughly. Stuff each lychee with a blueberry to act as the pupil. Use some of the melted white chocolate from step 1 to stick eyeball decorations onto the blueberry inside the lychee, or alternatively skewer the fruit together. Optionally, these lychee eyeballs can be added to a punch bowl for a spooky effect.
  5. Prepare Grape Snakes: Thread black and green grapes alternately onto short wooden skewers. Attach eyeball decorations using melted white chocolate or draw eyes with black writing icing or an edible ink pen to complete the ‘snake’ look.
  6. Arrange and Serve: On a large serving platter, arrange all the prepared freaky fruits attractively. Fill any gaps with leftover blueberries. If desired, add spooky Halloween figures and decorations to enhance the presentation.
