Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 250g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
- 50g wholemeal flour
- 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- ¼ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp porridge oats
Wet Ingredients
- 225ml buttermilk or natural yogurt
- 1 tsp honey
- 1 tbsp milk
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the plain flour, wholemeal flour, bicarbonate of soda, and ¼ teaspoon of salt. Use a fork to mix well to ensure even distribution of the ingredients.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in the buttermilk or natural yogurt along with the honey. Mix gently with a butter knife until the mixture forms a soft dough. It should be slightly sticky but not wet; if too wet, sprinkle in a little more flour to achieve the right consistency.
- Shape Dough: Lightly flour your hands to prevent sticking and divide the dough into six equal portions, roughly 80 grams each. Shape each portion into a rough round and flatten slightly to form rounds. Using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross into the top of each dough round.
- Add Toppings: Brush a small amount of milk over the surface of each shaped dough and sprinkle porridge oats on top for added texture and visual appeal.
- Preheat Air Fryer: Set your air fryer to 180°C (356°F) and line the basket with baking parchment to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
- Air Fry the Rolls: Place the rolls into the air fryer basket in batches if necessary, ensuring they do not touch. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes until they develop a golden color and feel firm to the touch.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the rolls from the air fryer and transfer them to a wire rack to cool. These are best enjoyed on the same day but can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days. To refresh before serving, warm them in the air fryer for 2 to 3 minutes.
Notes
- Ensure you cut a deep cross on top of each roll to allow proper expansion during cooking.
- Use baking parchment to avoid the dough sticking to the air fryer basket.
- If you do not have buttermilk, natural yogurt is an excellent substitute to keep the dough moist and tender.
- Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook the rolls in batches to ensure even cooking and browning.
- For best texture, consume the rolls fresh on the day of cooking.
- Adjust flour quantity slightly if your dough feels too sticky or wet.
